Chapter 17

When Vince didn't come into Java on the Monday morning after the movie, Jillene was relieved. On Tuesday, she was still trying to figure out what small talk she'd make when she saw him Wednesday, her relief turned to slight annoyance that grew into chafing irritation by Thursday. Come Friday, she was outright angry he hadn't shown a little pursuit. After all, she'd all but screamed "Take me" at him in a dark parking lot.

The weekend came and went and she never saw him. Not at the Laundromat or at the Seaview. She assumed he'd gone back to L.A. and it killed her to admit she was devastated. He hadn't even said goodbye. But what had she expected? He owed her nothing. They weren't seeing each other. He had no obligation to inform her of his plans.

She had to buck up and move on. Claire and Faye would be going for a visit to her mom's soon and there were things to do to get ready for their trip. Jillene had also been busy reformatting her ongoing plans for Java. What she had done so far had the potential to be something big.

June could end up being her month for making a turnaround.

Mocha Madness and her bookstore coupons were proving to be a smart decision. Business at Java the Hut had improved. Tourist traffic was way up and the increased sales helped Jillene's unbalanced budget. Also, after making some phone calls, she'd changed pastry vendors. Her new supplier, Pastry Cart, was a fledgling company eager to gain clients. She was getting lower prices for the same, if not better, pastries.

As she worked behind the counter with Hannah, Jillene glanced at the dining area. She caught herself looking for Vince, knowing he wouldn't be there. Half of the tables were occupied—no small feat given it was a cloudless afternoon. Usually when the sun came out, people stayed outside to enjoy the clear skies while they lasted.

While she recognized some of the customers, others she did not. More vacationers were arriving daily, but they'd been slower to get out to the island this week because there were film crews in Seattle drawing everyone's attention. She'd heard a big Hollywood movie was being filmed over there. She wished the studios would film something on Blue Heron. Then her business would really get a shot in the arm.

Slipping into the back for a moment, Jillene took a sip of her iced Italian crema coffee. Her personal weakness. She was on her third one today and it was after noon. Her usual cutoff time.

She'd been drinking far too much caffeine. She wasn't sleeping soundly. There had been no nightmares or obscene phone calls. Just dreams. Vivid pictures that assaulted her sleep. She was naked in bed with Vince. Wrapped in clean sheets, a sea breeze floating in from an open window. Warm and soft kisses. Arms entwined. Fingers skimming down her legs and an arm over her shoulder to pull her closer. Touching and exploring every inch of skin.
